How to become a member of the CGA

Joining the CGA is actually a simple process.

In order to become a member of the Colorado Golf Association you need to get an official USGA Handicap Index through one of the CGA's 220 member clubs. Conversely, when you receive a USGA Handicap Index through the GHIN system at one of our 220 member clubs, you become a member of the Colorado Golf Association.

For those people who are members of a private golf club, this is a fairly simple process that is almost always taken care of as a part of your club membership.

If you are not a member of a private golf club, visit your nearest public golf course or the one you play the most. Ask someone behind the desk for a handicap application or to point you to the handicap computer. You are looking for an application to fill out to become a member and receive a GHIN number (an ID number of sorts). Fill out the application and return it to the club with your payment. They will contact you with your new GHIN number, which you can begin using to post your scores. Once you have posted five scores and we pass one of the thirteen yearly revision periods, you will have an official USGA Handicap Index.

Sometimes finding the information you need can be difficult, especially at a busy public golf course. If you run into some interference, start by looking around the pro shop for the handicap computer. Near the computer you should be able to find the name of the treasurer, handicap chairman or club president. With their name should be their phone number so you can contact them, and they can assist you with your application. If you don't have any luck there, look around for a bulletin board with handicap and club information posted on it. You should be able to find the information you need here. This may sound a bit disorganized, and truthfully sometimes it is. This is because each club has its own application procedure. However, chances are you will find what you are looking for on your first visit.
